Not sure which system upgrade you referred to. I know only the one, after which we could not do miles upgrade online anymore and I flew many many times after that.

I do nothing special but as usual select/change seats through MMB or after OLCI. I prefer bulkhead seats over exit row/extra legroom seats, but both are almost always available for my choice.
