Just a small note: UA, US, and AC are examples of airlines that use the piece concept, with a total of 3*50lb (=3*23kg) for Star Gold, so "all airlines" is rather "some airlines".
I believe UA is 3*70lb for golds. I was recently permitted this on domestic.
