If you are a PM or DM why not just gift status to your non-status spouse? While it isn't going to guarantee an upgrade, it will make their chances of clearing a lot better and will also give the spouse benefits when they are flying alone.
Mostly because FO's and GM's rarely clear. I have my four PM SWU's to attempt to use, so I'm going to give those a try first, if I'm able to use them successfully in a useful manner, I'll take the additional SWU's once I reach DM. If not, then probably gift GM to my wife.
