You may be able to purchase an upgrade but this will depend on space being available on the day. LAS route is very busy so may not be possible.
So if the F cabin has 10 seats in it for example, they wouldn't sell all those 10 seats to avoid the "pack 'em in'" approach?
How would other pax know that the guy sitting in 3A upgraded using his miles? Apart from the very smug look on their faces of course!

I would have thought it made sense to offer a POUG (extra cash to the businesss), or a MFU (reduction of liability) in preference to an OPUP if needed. The company I work for is always looking for additonal revenue streams without diminishing the customer experience so as a PAX I would think it lucky to get a cabin that was not 100% full.
However, I understand that this may not be always possible because of systtem limitations and the catering aspects.
