I'm with you, Wayfahrer. In my experience, this generalization is true the vast majority of the time. I find it an exception for hotels to provide an adequate information about each room type.
What I would like to see about each room type is this:
(1) A descriptive name of the room that uniquely identifies the room type. (I'm surprised how often I find 2 rooms with different prices but the same description.)
(2) A full range of zoomable pictures, from different angles, of the bedroom, the bathroom, and any other significant spaces within the room. (FT trip reports are great for this! Why can't hotels do the same?)
(3) A picture of the view from the room, if this differentiates different room types (such as an ocean view, partial ocean view, pool view, garden view, city view, etc.).
(4) A meaningful description of the room and its features. (Does it have a separate bath and shower? Jacuzzi tub? Wired Internet, wireless Internet, or both? Mini-bar or empty fridge?)
(5) The size of the room (in sq ft or sq m).
Much of the time, only pictures for 1 or 2 room types are given, and sometimes some information (such as room size) is given, and sometimes it isn't, even for different room types at the same property! Without enough information, I spend a lot more time than I'd like in choosing among a dozen different room types.
Ironically, I've found that third-party reservation sites sometimes have more (and more-complete) information than the hotel's own Web site. There's really no excuse for a hotel to not have this information on their own site (unless they're trying to hide something).
