I was stopped back in 2007 crossing at the Ambassor Bridge from Windsor Ontario to Detroit Michigan. It was a horrible experience and one that has stayed with me every time I now venture to the US. At that time I was dating someone from Illinois. We decided to meet up in Detroit. When it was finally my turn to meet with the customs officer I was asked to hand over my passport, leave my vehicle and stand about 50 feet behind it. I was also told to leave absolutely every item I had with me in my vehicle. The US customs agents then grilled me for 45 minutes while they tore through my luggage and stripped the inside of my car. I was asked why I was visiting the US and I told them it was for some R&R. They asked me about my bf, if I was aware that he had a criminal record and that he was in the FBI database all of which I knew nothing about. I told them I was visiting a friend and nothing more. We werent even really dating, we were friends at that point. Needless to say the next thing they did was bring in drug sniffing dogs and looked under my car with mirrors (it reminded me of my visit to East Germany back in 1985 passing through Checkpoint Charlie). They kept asking me if I had any drugs on me, I kept insisting I didnt. They found nothing but my car was a mess (and it wasnt even mine considering it was a lease). I asked them if they would clean up the mess they made, they laughed at me and told me I had to clean up before I left. Belongings were even on the ground outside the vehicle. I was humiliated and in tears. At this point I wasnt even aware that I had yet been red flagged until four days later when I returned to Canada. Our customs got a good laugh on my account and asked me how my vacation with my bf was....I have never done anything to be treated as horribly as this. I have since returned to the US but I still get looks and questions even though I havent been in contact with this individual in over five years. I have since only gone over with friends/family and am deathly afraid to drive over with my own vehicle even though I have since acquired a new one. I was told the red flag would only last seven years, however, I have a friend who has also been red flagged and she advised me its a lifetime thing
