I do not believe this is true.
In multi-carrier itineraries where the most significant carrier rule comes in to play it might, but UA isn't playing by those rules yet and this was an all-UA itinerary so UA rules apply throughout, and the OP's family was checking in for an itinerary which included a segment in F.
