Although I can sympathise with anyone who can't sleep on a flight, it always strikes me as a bad move to render oneself incapable of responding reasonably quickly in an emergency. I've had to haul a colleague off a plane that had to return to our starting point for some technical reason after he had a sleeping pill and it wasn't easy - in a real emergency I very much doubt I'd risk my skin to do the same.
happened to me a while ago. Took a temazapam on boarding a DL flight from NRT-LAX. Part of the rear engine (MD11) dropped off as we were taxiing.

Was a bit of a nightmare (excuse the pun) being offloaded and trying to arrange an alternative flight. Don't recall too much, other than waking up in the lounge in HNL wondering why I wasn't at LAX. Can't remember flying to HNL!
