I've had to haul a colleague off a plane that had to return to our starting point for some technical reason after he had a sleeping pill and it wasn't easy - in a real emergency I very much doubt I'd risk my skin to do the same.
I suspect he took a very strong dose. I take sleeping tablets when flying and can wake after a couple of hours sleep and function, no problem. I do find i feel just less sharp than normal, that's the only ill affect I suffer. I take quite a low dose though, enough to send me off.
