Don't stay at the W City Center, especially on the weekend. The area is dead so you'll not have much to do. The Westin on Michigan Ave is better located. I've stayed at the W Lakeshore but that too is not centrally located, though better than city center. Lakeshore is very close to the beach and pier so just depends on what you are looking to do. Unfortunately, I can't comment on the upgrades.
