I used to bring one until I bought a Samsung tablet 10 months ago with a good 6-8 hours battery life. Haven't brought a power adapter along since--just more weight. Didn't UA require an empower adapter for their fleet? Do they have power in coach now?
The majority of aircraft still have DC cigarette-lighter type outlets, though new and converted aircraft are getting AC outlets. AA has a whole page on technology on board you might want to review:

There may be certain aircraft types with the power disabled. I haven't been keeping up on this topic, so maybe someone else that has can identify those for you.
