The carrier (Emirates) said 'I think it will be ok' - both times when I called, hence my 'not getting the warm and fuzzies'! I suspect I was talking to agents in a call centre far from Dubai who don't know the process there.

The UAE embassy said that the information is on the website (which it isn't) but that you could always get a visa on arrival for transit if needed. They wouldn't elucidate any further! The only issue is that I know visas can take some time to be issued at airports, and it isn't a super long connection.

I checked the destination forum, but couldn't find what I was specifically looking for, and I know that the rules changed yet again in 2011 too.

I'm going to go with 'not needed' and if it is, then it will just have to be done at the airport!

I think the most helpful one I have found is on the airport hotel website, which seems to suggest that you don't clear immigration between arrival and departure, so will go with that!!
