The issue for the OP is the CoC doesn't spell out in any detail what happens when a time of purchase U/G is not honored. In particular how it relates to space being available on the plane and the GA not wanting to take the time to process the seat request. I think the OP is due cash some cash back for the segment, but good luck getting Delta to open it's wallet.
It's too bad topics like this are a regular feature on this board. I wonder how many people get F'ed over by this that aren't on FT.
While I haven't purchased an UP fare in a long time, were I to do so I would keep a screen shot of the Y fare that I could have otherwise purchased, on the day of purchase... just to substantiate any potential refund claim.
