The ding and auto-connect are very nice features of the iPhone app, so I'm hoping there is something similar for Android. The audio signal lets you keep the phone in your pocket as you walk around, not needing to look at it.
Actually, the app somehow checks wifi signals to see if they really connect to the internet...some do, some do not. The signals that do not provide real internet access might be surveillance cameras, or maybe unencrypted signals that require a login (e.g., hotels), or something else.
If the internet connection is real and usable, then the app dings.
