Sometimes I look for a double connection. I usually fly SLC-CMI so I will go SLC-DFW-ORD-CMI or SLC-ORD-DFW-CMI although the former is better. If when you book select more search options and do the search by schedule (showing 50) rather than price and schedule. You will get some obscure flight routing, but be prepared to pay more for them.
