Qantas should indeed be able to provide you with your AA BP at check-in in Oz.

Qantas policy is to only check luggage through with airlines they have an Interline agreement with on the following basis:

1. Flight segments are in the one PNR or
2. Interline airline on separate ticket is of oneworld.

So QF will check through with AA on separate tickets.

On arrival into LAX after completing immigration/customs you simply head up to the luggage redeposit area, drop it off, then walk around to T4.
