Long story short the term is more loaded in Judaism.
For Jews, "temple" is a term started by the Reform movement (and adopted by the Conservative movement as well) because back then they didn't recognize the centrality of worship at the Temple in Jerusalem as a religious tenet. Therefore, every synagogue was in and of itself a "temple." Some of this philosophy has changed but the appellation usually connotes a Reform or Conservative synagogue.
I feel like the argument in this case is more semantic/academic and just serves to confuse people, like when my b-school had a huge argument over whether to call itself "international" or "global."
