It was automatic. The old card expired May 31st and the new card arrived today (June 12th). However, had I been on the road attempting to access OW lounges outside of Australia then some lounge dragons would cut you some slack with a card that expired only a few days previously.

I checked my Marco Polo account after the May 31st expiry and saw my membership level remained at Diamond. CX generally has no soft landing for Marco Polo membership so I was fairly confident the new Diamond card would arrive soon.
