If for example the fare would expire today (June 11) then no the hold will not honor the fare if it increases. However, some FTs have said they have called web services and got the fare reinstated.
To comply with recent DoT regulations, AA offers the 24 hour hold. This hold applies even if the fare crosses the advance purchase threshold before the 24 hour hold is up. If you notice the hold isn't until tomorrow due to this, then you must call AA up.
However, doing this will mean if you make any changes, the entire itinerary will reprice (even the part you don't want to reprice), so you will be stuck with what you have. Thus, you can either purchase the ticket the way it is or just abandon it.
