That can't be the reason. I routinely use my AAdvantage number for my AA flights and then show my BA Gold card for lounge access on domestic flights.
Not on the ticket/PNR itself though. That is under the Oneworld lounge access policies. It might also be AA's IT not being able to handle it if the option to do so was added.
