On a fairly recent flight (which appeared full according to expertflyer) myself and the OH checked in online but then were delayed getting to the airport due to the arriving flight being delayed (on a different carrier) and subsequently missed the flight altogether.

Does the airline try to fill these seats with stand by passengers or do the seats remain empty for the flight as we had "checked in"?
