Yes, it is annoying, esp since people manning the priority lines at the airport are not often completely familiar with the codes either. I had a paid business class ticket at Heathrow (Z fare) yesterday, but it took a little convincing for the person to understand that Z meant business class.
Whom were you trying to convince? The folks at FastTrack security? I've never had any issues there, they typically just scan the BP. My last two ex-LHR flights were ON (upgraded from J) which is probably even more likely to cause confusion but they never even looked at it.
