Hello,

Prepare yourself, LAX terminals 1 (US) and 6/7/8 (UA) are a third world disaster.

You *will* have to reclear TSA as you have to walk outside. That is the major sticking point for a short connection like this. If TSA is clear you should be able to breeze through, but terminal 1 also plays host to Southwest (WN) and every time I've been through a Southwest security checkpoint I've been stuck behind slow moving less than experienced travelers.

I just recently did a US [term 1] --> UA [term 7] international connection a few weeks ago (early May). 45 minutes is cutting it really close considering that boarding begins approx 30 minutes prior to departure.

Ignoring that fact, you can move from terminal 7 --> terminal 1 very quickly via East Way at the arrivals (lower) level in about 10-15 minutes. If you run fast you can make it in under 10 minutes. Make sure you wait for the green crosswalk signals, there are 2 big ones which take about 2 minutes to turn green after hitting the button. If you try to dart across the road without the signal, you're in for a world of hurt. To give you a frame of reference, I walked pretty slowly from 1 --> 7 carrying a 12 lb backpack in 14 minutes (after deplaning). There was no line at TSA terminal 7 at that time, so I was airside immediately. It actually took longer to walk inside the terminal to my gate than it did to walk from 1 --> 7. Not sure what your UA gate will be as they have pretty much the whole terminal --- but the US gates are towards the front of terminal 1 (which isn't very big to begin with.)

The route isn't all that safe -- although there is a sidewalk the lighting is poor and it just didn't give me a very good feeling while I was walking across (at ~9:45pm). If this is a concern for you, you can walk across via the parking garages at the departure (upper) level, but that isn't marked and will take longer.

In summary, 45 minutes is doable, but only if things work out perfectly. Given that amount of time, you'll probably one of the last people to board (if not the last.) I'd prefer a minimum of 1 hr in your case. Anything > 1 hr is no problem.
