If you bought the ticket from AA, issued on AA ticket stock, then you can use AAdvantage miles to upgrade specific fare classes (Fare classes are: J, C, D, W, Y, B) on AA, BA, and IB flights. My understanding is that you cannot use Avios as "1.Upgrading using Avios Points bookings on BA, AA and IB Flights can only be made online at ba.com or direct with British Airways.
