Its worth noting this is the first vacation I have ever taken where I have not rented a car. 2 weeks, 3 cities and several villages, all accessible with public transportation.

Good for 3 reasons:
Car rentals are close to prohibitively expensive.
Your geography makes going by car challenging, and I actually get to see something other than the road on this trip.
More opportunities to interact with people along the way.
