I'm actually doing both: BA miles for BA flights and AA domestic flights.
One of the domestic tests I did was BOS - MIA on March 15, 2013 and coming back on March 22nd. I thought at the least I would be able to get some traction on this one since it's a flight that will have multiple options each day. I just get a no availability screen (it seems to be the case with all of searches I've done for Avios on AA metal), not even a "use more points for this flight" option.
Perhaps I'm doing something wrong on the searches.
There is no economy award availability on either of those days and the online tool seems to be able to select business class and not 1st class , which may be why the 1st class options are not appearing
Nothing necessarily wrong with the search. If you search back a few days , you will find that the BA booking tool does show flights on BOS-MIA where there is availability for economy awards
