You are NOT powerless. Fly another carrier. And make sure to fax the receipts to UA. If you keep buying tickets from UA, even after they treat you like this, what incentive is there for anyone to improve the experience?

Alternatively, if you do keep buying tickets on UA, when you should ask yourself if what you're complaining about is really that big a deal to you.
