No reason not to standby; you second flight won't be affected. Just beware that when you are standing by you are unlikely to keep your upgrade on the first flight. Upgrades are processed first for everyone confirmed on the flight for all fare classes you would be given a J seat only if available after all the others were processed.

Huh. Well, OLCI only offered one possible flight for standby even though there were 4 earlier flights with Y9. (none had R space so should not have affected the options I was given). I called in and flight pass desk was very helpful, gave me my choice of flight.
Interestingly, I was the first ug called at the gate. So one more inconsistent data point to add to the mystery of whose upgrade is it anyway!?
