Silly it may seem to the younger members here, but it's an age thing. In the days of the late King, when I started my education, it was perceived as faintly 'common' to abbreviate words such as telephone. The apostrophe was used as a means of indicating that you knew the correct word ... But were too lazy/busy to spell out in full.
