I would cite authorities on the subject. My experience is that there are authorities on grammar on both sides of the pond.
It is also my experience that rules of grammar are useful only to the extent they prevent confusion and reflect actual usage. To that end, I would write 777s to prevent confusion with 777's, but find 'phone to be utterly silly.
