To be fair, PMUA's system within 24 hours wasn't great either. Within 24 hours, waitlists would continue to clear, even after you check in. But when you do clear after check-in, there was no way to get a seat assignment or even get off the upgrade list (since you've cleared). It almost always ended up being a last-minute seat assignment thing once you get to the airport and had an agent take you off the upgrade list and confirm a seat in First.
Under the old regime, where upgrade-after-OLCI produced an error, it was possible to call 1K Web Support and get a seat assignment after (what seemed at the time) an excruciatingly slow 15 minute wait.
