I have done it several times myself.
There is no trick. I was not even aware that I could transit through the U.S. and not claim my checked luggage at the port of entry untill the airline asked me if I wanted to claim my bags in ATL. I asked, "Do I have a choice?". I was told that that I did. I arrived in ATL knowing that I would not have to claim my bag in ATL. Customs people didn't like the fact that I did not claim my bags in ATL and sent me for secondary check anyway.

Ahh.. that does sound like a couple of secrets that exist

, one to get a goot check in agent, and the other the special Customs check. Ah well, I did not get offered the options, but I might just ask for it the next time, hopefully the agents will know it exists

. Will report back my luck if any

Well thats the thing, knowing that can be tough, specially after prices seemed to be lower in MEX compared to EWR and DEL, ah well thats just my loss.
