Why should the OP have to call NH? He's flying UA, standing front of a UA agent to handle a UA-generated problem (UA's cancelled flight).
The agent should have offered F on any flight with F. If F was sold out, then that should have been explained. It seems the level of communication from the agent was poor, but what do you expect -- they're hardly able to think with all the steps they have to do to make SHARES do what they need it to.
