I've done the ICN-JFK-JCN route a few times, and the first time I got a whole row of 3 seats blocked off for me near the back, as I usually do if possible. Only problem is that the last 4-5 rows in Y seem to have the armrests bolted down for some reason. So having the seats next to you blocked didn't mean you could raise the arm rests and stretch out.
It's technically a 2-hour turnaround at JFK. The plane was late arriving though, due to "weather" (I'm guessing the jet stream wasn't so favorable) and from the time the doors opened until boarding the return flight was 1h 10m. Luckily being in the 2nd row of economy I was able to bypass everyone else and reach passport control first, with a totally empty hall. I'll have to write up a trip report of the turnaround and post it in the master turnaround thread in the Mileage Run Discussion forum. This is just one of many turnarounds I've done to various destinations, and not even the longest, by a significant amount. When TG was still flying non-stop BKK-LAX I did a direct turnaround on that 17+ hour flight, not once, but twice, and had an additional 5+ hour flight connecting to BKK. Now that's an epic turnaround. Although luckily it was all in C.
I'm OZ Diamond Plus, and they have a section of the better seats at the front of the Y cabin reserved for us or whoever else they choose to give them to. I was in the second row with the middle seat empty and the armrests which swing up. The Korean lady on the other side of the empty seat was content with her armrest down and inside her single seat area. So I took up most of the empty seat area and was comfortable enough. Although on take off and landing, they have a cutout section of the divider between Y and C that opens up, and I'm left salivating at those seated in C. After takeoff they close it, along with the curtains so you no longer see what you're missing. Of course on the return flight I had all those Y peons salivating at me being in C.
If the flight loads are light enough, I try to do what you do, and get a row of 3 seats to myself. When I can do that, I really don't mind at all being in economy vs. business class. But going out there were only a handful of empty seats, and they were all in the front part of the aircraft. I spent quite a bit of time in the rear galley area and didn't see any empty seats around there at all.
