Gate-Checked Bag CRJ-200

Honestly in years of flying UA I don't think I've ever had the (mis)pleasure of winding up on a CRJ-200. Here's my question:

Flying SJC-LAX-EWR. CRJ-200 from SJC-LAX with a 1.5 hour connection at LAX before hopping on a 737-900 for the red-eye to EWR. I see that the overheads are pathetic on the CRJ and can't accommodate my rollerboard. If I gate-check on the CRJ can I get my bag back for the connection so I can have all my stuff on the red-eye and be able to walk off in EWR? Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks!
