The time it takes to walk to and then clear Customs is more than the time it takes your bags to arrive. And you literally have to walk thru Baggage Claim to exit the Customs area anyway, so I just snag my bag on the way thru and save myself the 5 minute wait for the Pink Tags to be brought up.
Seconded for YYZ. Another factor is that YYZ doesn't have the little luggage elevator at the end of the jet bridge. They walk them up the stairs near the aircraft door, so you end up with that whole mess of people standing on either side of the jet bridge, waiting for their bag to appear.
Much easier to grab it from the luggage belt on the way out.
