Must be something cultural. I generally prefer things cooler, with the thought being that I can always put something on to stay warmer, but there's not much you can do in a warm environment to get cooler. I've only been on an NH plane once, but it did seem a little on the warm side now that you mention it. Warm plane and a short seat = not the best flight. Service was stellar though.
Idle speculation, but post earthquake there has been a large effort at energy conservation in Japan--cool in winter warm in summer--and perhaps it carries over the airport and planes.
