Having done the YYZ run a dozen times a year for several years, it is actually much easier to check your bags at your origination point and pick them up in baggage claim.

The time it takes to walk to and then clear Customs is more than the time it takes your bags to arrive. And you literally have to walk thru Baggage Claim to exit the Customs area anyway, so I just snag my bag on the way thru and save myself the 5 minute wait for the Pink Tags to be brought up.
