Upgrading $99 VISA BofA companion certificate as MVP Gold

Can I buy a value fare booked in S, or B, or full flex fares booked in Y to get the instant upgrade and then apply the companion certificate to also get my companion in F?

Or is there a better way?

Thanks for any insight.

Based on the above response, I'm assuming that if I was a MVP gold and purchased one of those instantly-upgradable fares, my BofA companion certificate holder (with no AS status) would be upgraded as well at time of booking, provided there are 2 "U" seats available? Is this correct?
