Extension is unlikely. The ecert only needs to be used to make a purchase by the expiration date -- the flight dates came be later.
There is a chance the cert can be converted to a system-wide cert since they live outside of the USA. Not a standard policy but some have been successful requesting that (status my help).
Finally this cert can be used by others (not just the receiving party).
