Not really looking for a lecture here, I understand how the system works and will deal. More interested in input from folks w experience at LAX - e.g., how spread out are UAL's operations there, am I likely to have to change terminals, etc. thanks anyway.
At LAX, CR2s and CR7s use T8 (any of the gates). The 744 to SYD always uses the gates at the end of T7. It is a bit of a hike and you should expect it to take 7-14 mins after deplaning. You do not have to go through security.

You don't want to gate check anything in SLC and have to wait for it in LAX.
Excellent advice above (definitely talk to the FA). You NEED to be at the gate 10 mins before departure or they will leave without you. You may lose your seat if you are not at the gate 20 mins before departure. If you make the flight, they might hold the flight to get your bags on (as I'm sure everyone has experienced from time to time).
UX flights are often the first to be delayed or cancelled. Any options for going earlier through SFO? On day of departure, if it looks like you will miss-connect, UA should help reroute you.
