Yes you can separate it online..there is a link when you view the reservation to separate the travelers. If you're both the same status, and you don't mind the risk that one will be upgraded and the other won't..then yes I would separate so as to improve the chances that each of you individually will be upgraded (perhaps at different times). If you insist on both of you being upgraded or neither.. then leave yourself linked.
