Yes, they help in identifying my luggage and mitigate to a certain degree others picking up the wrong bag. I use them on both checked and carry on luggage.

Yes, loss is very rare. My trick is that I use the straps and the tags
inside the handle area. It means the straps are of less risk of being caught and broken while the tag itself still sticks out to help spot and identify it.

It's one of the reasons I use them: redundancy of ID/information. The ID tag that is factory fitted also has my details on it, but it's obviously the same on all similar bags, whereas the combination of both tags + the abuse metered out to my bag as a result of it having CE/CW priority tags on it all helps giving them a unique look.
