I've been at platinum status the last two years. I'm currently at 36 nites and not sure I'll make the 75 nites to achieve platinum status again, though last year I fell short and I was still awarded platinum. I have some travel scheduled in June and July of this year where I could likely meet a Platinum Challenge. MR does tend to extend status if they feel there is good reason to do so. There is no obvious formula to determine what they will do until it's done.
From what I've read, you will not be able to do a Platinum challenge as long as you are a Platinum. You will be required to drop to Gold (remember MR has soft landings) before doing the challenge.
