There is likely a cultural issue here as well. Americans are more standoffish than many foreigners. In some countries, it would be rude to move away from someone once you're seated because you would be implying that they are giving off body odor or something.

The best way to handle cultural differences is usually a frank and polite conversation.

Good catch. What if the OP were Thai or Cambodian but the "foreign" dude was from another country?
