I can understand the psychological trauma aspect, as it must have been a horrific experience to go through, but 22 years later will knowing that it was all a dastardly MI6 plot actually help anyone feel better, psychologically, about it?
Or do people simply want to feel better via their wallets?
It was a war situation. The whole thing was a mess. No one knew what was going on. In this sort of situation one should always think of "cock-up" over "conspiracy", especially when the British Government / BA are involved. Like in Bahrain in 1990 when the Embassy issued us all with WW2-era gas masks that you could only breathe through for 30 minutes (half the time it would take between the air raid siren and the all clear...)
