I honestly don't think I agree with this - I work in Marketing (event and experiential) and I think there's something to be said by providing differentiated customer service/marketing through publicly available customer information.
For example, I love golf - you can see that from my public profiles. If SPG was leaving golf magazines (vs. cooking, movies, cycling, etc.) in my room I'd think that was useful. Likewise if they gave me local course info, discounts and so forth.
I agree with the sentiments above that public social media information is public and people should 100% expect it to be looked at. If you can derive value from it so much the better.
