I think it's just the way the industry was moving... back in the 90s when most of those birds were delivered 9 abreast was still the way... now it's a good mix of 9 and 10 abreast, with some retrofits a la AA.

2-5-2 is still my favourite configuration on the 777, and yes I've sat in the middle of the row of 5 before...
