As long as you just show up at check in (or make an appearance once at the front desk) it would be fine. I've also had luck booking for someone else while I never showed up to the hotel (I was in the same city but didn't end up having to show up).

If the rates are the same regardless of whose booking, why not give it a try anyway? Worst case would be that they deny you credit (but your colleague would get it)
