How do the PMCO-style e-certs work if a flight is refunded?

I've got one of the DEN-NRT itins (B fare, $980) on hold at the moment via FareLock, and am going to ticket it later today.

I have a $400 PMCO-style e-cert for a service issue on hand (the ones with the promo code and PIN).

My question: if I apply that e-cert as part of the payment, then later the ticket is refunded (due to UA not getting approvals for the route, for example, or delays in getting the 787, or outright cancelling the route), will I get back the e-cert value? On PMUA, the answer would be "no" (though I'd be able to potentially get it back as a "one time exception" via bugging .bomb Web Support).

I won't use a cert and will just pay cash for the whole thing if there's the possibility that a later refunding of the ticket doesn't also give me back the e-cert value (and will save the cert for another trip).
